What A Day!

Today, while John McCain had to cancel a scheduled event due to the twelve mile long oil spill in the Mississippi River, Barack Obama spoke before a throng of over two hundred thousand at Berlin’s Victory Column.

A snippet of Obama’s speech, which was met with wild enthusiasm by one and all:

“I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we’ve struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We’ve made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions.

But I also know how much I love America. I know that for more than two centuries, we have strived – at great cost and great sacrifice – to form a more perfect union; to seek, with other nations, a more hopeful world. Our allegiance has never been to any particular tribe or kingdom – indeed, every language is spoken in our country; every culture has left its imprint on ours; every point of view is expressed in our public squares. What has always united us – what has always driven our people; what drew my father to America’s shores – is a set of ideals that speak to aspirations shared by all people: that we can live free from fear and free from want; that we can speak our minds and assemble with whomever we choose and worship as we please.

These are the aspirations that joined the fates of all nations in this city. These aspirations are bigger than anything that drives us apart. It is because of these aspirations that the airlift began. It is because of these aspirations that all free people – everywhere – became citizens of Berlin. It is in pursuit of these aspirations that a new generation – our generation – must make our mark on the world…”

Quite an astonishing contrast between this and the last message spoken by our current President on foreign soil:

“Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter!”

Kurt — Obama was sensational today. Simply impressive. I expected much from him but he gave even more than I expected.

Can you imagine 200,000 people showing up to see you? Friggin amazing! 200,000!

Obama did America PROUD!

As for Bush the ‘polluter’ — what an infantile azz!

For some reason, everyone neglects to mention that Obama spoke at a Free Concert.

Maybe all those thousands of young Germans turned up for the two bands that were playing instead of coming to hear a speach in english.

Nah, Obama’s charisma is so powerful it transcends language.

More Kool Aid anyone?

Paulette, it was spectacular!
Thinking Voter, please stop thinking like an American. Europeans know English as a second language. They understood every word.

Kurt,

A most excellent blog entry.

Linking you to my blogroll. Keep up the good work!

Ironic that he had to admit that America is not perfect in a land where millions of Jews, gays, gypsies and others were murdered!

Thinking Voter – I have been to Europe several times and rarely have someone not understood English — most people there speak at least 2 languages. America is one of the few countries that most people only speak one language fluently.

Obama’s reference to America not being perfect was an olive branch – to show Europeans that the arrogance of George W. Bush is over. It is the first time in many years that I have seen Europeans flying the American flag – that is a good thing!

Also be reminded that after the concert EVERYONE could have left if they had no interest in hearing Obama speak.

Criticize Obama for his policies — stop hating just for hating sake.

Paulette, yes it was an olive branch. But I repeat that the country that liberated the concentration camps should not have to put out an olive branch to the country that put people in them.
