Read My Chap Stick

When John McCain told George Stephanopoulos he would raise taxes, several thoughts came rushing to my mind. Well, what he actually told the host of This Week was that he wouldn’t take increasing payroll taxes off the table. In Washington-speak, that means get ready to shell out more green…

My first thought was, there’s the straight talkin’ Maverick I knew back in 2000. Another thought was, this guy understands that the number one problem we have is our national debt, and he’s willing to address it. Yet another thought was, if he’s serious about putting America first and politics second, we might all have a chance to survive everything Bush did to us. Also, I thought, if he really means this, I could actually vote for him.

Unfortunately, hours later, he was asked a question by a cute little girl: “If you become President, will you raise our taxes?”

While the crowd was still in full aw-mode, McCain answered: “No.”

Damn it, he almost had me…

LOL — he ‘almost’ got you! Did you hear his campaign spokesperson pretty much say that McCain spoke out of line. He forgot his speaking points and told the truth my accident.

McCain cannot have any pressure — can you imagine him as President and dealing with 100 critical issues each day? :-(

It sounds like you enjoy paying taxes. More power to you! In fact, just give all your income to the government if you would like.

It also sounds like “putting America first” means being a good loyal Democrat instead of a Republican.

I haven’t read enough of your blog to know for sure, so enlighten me if I’m wrong.

America, OUR country, is hundreds of billions of dollars in debt. There are a lot of reasons our economy is in the worst shape it’s been in since WW II, but the debt is far and away the biggest problem.
Even if we cut future budgets to the bare bones, somebody’s gonna have to start paying down that debt.

Kurt, I share your dismay over your national debt. While I agree that it will be hard to pay it down by just cutting costs, I’m not sure how much more tax burden people can bear. I also have a moral problem with the practice of taking away some people’s money to give to other people.

We have learned over the last few decades that high taxes on people, especially businesses, stifle the economy. That will end up making the national debt higher, not lower. That is because fewer people will be working, which means less tax revenue coming in, and they will be receiving benefits, which means more spending going out.

If I could have my way, we would lower taxes somewhat and cut spending deeply. And I mean deeply. It’s time for some major belt tightening. Some of the cuts would be done by getting government out of endeavors it was never supposed to be involved in.

One thing puzzles me. If I am reading you correctly, you favor policies that will add billiions of dollars to the annual federal budget. How is that position consistent with your concern about the debt?

Renaissance guy — you seem to be under the assumption that McCain is a traditional republican who believes in a smaller government and less spending. He isn’t.

On ABC on Sunday he said he was willing to raise taxes. He wouldn’t leave anything off the table. When his campaign told him that he told the truth by accident he switched his position and said he wouldn’t raise taxes.

Which McCain do you believe – the Sunday version or the Monday version?

Additionally, McCain wants to continue the war in Iraq and start one in Iran. Where do you think the money is going to come from? More taxes.

McCain has been in Washington over 20 years. He wants to be POTUS real bad. He is willing to say whatever he has to get into office.

Once there, if he is smart, he will have to do what he has to do to get the American economy back on point — I forgot — he knows nothing about the economy. Each time he talks about the economy he has to read from a slip of paper – very comforting.

Renaissance – don’t think emotionally or politically. Think truthfully. McCain will continue to decimate the American economy.

Think George Bush — Bush knows more about the economy than McCain. Think about that.

I will not be voting for McCain.
